Product description
An increase in body temperature, whether due to exercise, travel, or high ambient temperatures, will cause the horse to sweat. The evaporation of this sweat helps the horse cool down and regulate its body temperature.
Sweating causes fluid loss, along with the loss of body salts or electrolytes, which are contained in sweat.
Important electrolytes are sodium (Na) and chloride (Cl), potassium (K), calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) and they play many key roles in the body, but especially in muscle contraction, the nervous system and maintaining fluid balance around cells.
Potassium is usually supplied in abundance in the horse's diet, as most forages, such as pastures, hay, and haylage, are rich in potassium.
Sodium and chloride are found at much lower levels in forages, and even for horses performing light work, sodium and chloride must be provided daily.
Most compound feeds, such as cubes and mixes, will provide some sodium and chloride in the form of salt, but if intake is low, they may not provide enough, and supplemental electrolytes will be required. Similarly, horses that work hard, especially in hot or humid conditions, will lose greater amounts of electrolytes and water in sweat. Often, there will not be enough normal daily feed to replace these losses, and additional electrolytes will be needed to replenish these losses, encouraging the horse to drink and promoting rehydration, to maintain health and performance.
A horse in moderate work, trotting and galloping, can lose up to 5-7 liters of fluid and 50-70g of electrolytes in an hour, and this will increase as the intensity or duration of the work increases, and even more if the weather is hot and humid!
Therefore, maintaining hydration and replacing lost electrolytes is important not only for elite competition horses, but also for all horses and ponies that sweat after work, from Pony Club rallies or long summer rides to international eventers, show jumpers, and dressage horses!
Because a horse's sweat contains a higher concentration of sodium and chloride than its other body fluids, it is important to provide supplemental electrolytes in the correct concentrations to ensure the desire to drink is maintained, so that fluid balance can be restored, and electrolyte losses can be compensated for, promoting recovery and ensuring continued optimal performance.
This is especially important during long-distance rides, or longer shows and events, when fatigue will increase and performance will decline if electrolyte and fluid balance is not restored.
Apple Lytes Solution has been carefully formulated to replace key electrolytes and encourage drinking to help support rehydration and maintain peak performance throughout the season.
Apple Lytes Solution is highly palatable and should be mixed with the feed. Clean, fresh water should always be available.
