Product description

Horses are designed to feed on runoff, grazing up to 16 hours a day. This means they must constantly secrete acid to help digest this almost continuous source of food entering their stomach. A grazing horse will also produce up to 9 gallons of saliva per day, which, in addition to lubricating the food, also helps maintain a healthy gastric pH.

The horse has a small stomach and feed does not stay there for long, so even short periods of the day without access to forage should be minimized.

Providing a small amount of roughage, such as straw, before exercise will also promote stomach health and comfort.

There are a number of additional management tips that can also help maintain gastric health:

Plan yard and field regimes to avoid stressors such as harassment or excessive activity near the barn.
Avoid starchy foods and instead use a forage-based diet with digestible fiber sources and oil to provide additional energy.
Try to schedule periods of turnout or hand grazing if possible to allow the horse to benefit from the antioxidants in fresh green forage.
Plan training and competition schedules carefully, especially when long-distance travel may result in limited forage intake.

Equine America ULS-gard Granules have been formulated with carefully selected ingredients to help maintain gastric health and comfort, including:

Slow-release calcium and magnesium from seaweed, to help maintain a healthy intestinal pH.

Lecithin: A special type of fat that supports healthy cells in the stomach lining.

Pectins, marshmallow root, and licorice: to help produce mucilage that acts as a physical barrier to the unprotected upper part of the stomach.

Aloe vera and glycine: to help maintain a healthy gastric lining (stomach lining).

Nucleotide-rich yeast: Provides beta-glucans that help increase the viscosity of stomach contents and provide nutritional support for a healthy gastric lining.

Prebiotics and probiotics to support a healthy gut microbiome.

Alfalfa and soybean hulls provide a fibrous "mat" and help maintain a healthy gastric pH.

Additional management factors to help maintain digestive health and comfort.

- Go out onto the grassy paddock whenever practical and possible, ideally with a placid companion, even if only for short periods of time.
- Ensure unlimited forage whenever possible. For beneficial feeds, where calories are limited, offer very frequent but controlled amounts of forage, with the largest amount allowed at night. Choose clean but low-calorie forage to allow larger amounts.
- Offer forage at different points in the barn to encourage natural foraging behavior.
- Try to reduce social stressors, such as bullying, stablemates, or proximity to the food pantry.
- Feed a good double handle (or 1 rounded scoop) of alfalfa straw before exercise or contest warm-up to provide a fibrous "mat" in the stomach, even if forage is available in the barn or truck.
- Consider replacing some starch calories with Equine America Supreme Omega Oil in the diet.
